Ask for a realistic timeline for onboarding an iGaming merchant in your jurisdiction, and understand what documentation is required upfront versus what can be provided as part of an ongoing compliance process. An unrealistic onboarding estimate — "two to three weeks" when the reality is more often three to four months — is often an early indicator of a provider that has not genuinely done this at scale before.
Ask about the provider's process for chargeback notification, evidence submission, and representment. Do they provide a chargeback management portal? What is their average representment win rate for iGaming merchants? How quickly are you notified of chargebacks, and what is the response window? Providers with strong chargeback tooling can significantly reduce the operational burden on your team and help you maintain ratios within acceptable thresholds during periods of elevated dispute activity.
Payment provider pricing in iGaming is often complex, with multiple fee layers including interchange plus processing margins, authorisation fees, chargeback fees, FX conversion margins, settlement fees, and monthly minimums. Ask for a comprehensive fee schedule and model your actual expected costs based on your transaction mix and volumes. The headline rate is rarely the number that matters most — it is the blended effective cost across your full transaction mix that determines the true commercial impact of the relationship.
Ask for references from iGaming operators with comparable scale and market footprint to your own. Generic references are not useful; what you want is to speak with an operator who has been through a similar regulatory environment, similar geographic expansion, and similar scaling challenges. A provider that cannot point to credible, comparable iGaming clients with verifiable contact details is a risk regardless of how compelling the sales presentation is. Speaking with two or three reference clients will give you more actionable intelligence than any number of polished demos.
